West Athens 3 on 3 Father’s Day Basketball Tourney

The local community around Helen Keller Park began their weekend father’s day celebration with the annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament at the park.  The event was co-sponsored by C.U.R.E., A Better LA and A Foundation for Kids.

Eleven teams entered the double elimination competition that began at 10 in the morning, with the winner being crowned about 3:30 that afternoon.  While the games were being played on the court, families enjoyed the free barbeque, inflatable attractions and carnival games.  Players consumed about a pallet of bottled water and drinks on the sunny day. The two finalists played a total of 8 games each, including taking the best of 3 finals against each other a 3rd game that was finally decided by a 2 pointer from behind the arch in the 3rd game.

The main story of the day was fantastic competition which was matched by incredible sportsmanship.  The teams in the tournament played the way the game was meant to be played – with great effort and intensity, but also with congratulations for good shots and good play and helping opponents up when they went to the ground.  It was truly inspiring to watch the combination of great sportsmanship with such physical play.
