People for Community Improvement (“PCI”), A Foundation for Kids, and A Better LA teamed up to host a community event on Saturday, June 5th 2010. The event was the first of its kind to be held in this particular area. An estimated 500 local residents welcomed the carefree day of free food, drinks, snacks, carnival games, crafts, face painting, inflatable attractions and prizes.

PCI founder, Kenneth Jones, said that this previously untouched location was chosen in order to spread a positive message, reach out to local supporters, and provide this community with the tools to begin to change from within. The event, at the Imperial Church of Christ parking lot in South Central Los Angeles (on the corner of Imperial Highway and San Pedro Street) provided a familiar and peaceful spot for the gathering of people from the neighborhood.

Volunteers from PCI and the Church staffed the entire event, including concessions, games and prize booth.  Staff of A Foundation for Kids provided management assistance and donated the items for the event. Alongside crash courses on skills such as making cotton candy and snow cones, there were lessons on keeping kids safe on the inflatable attractions. The volunteers took to their tasks as if they were seasoned pros.

The event provided an opportunity for PCI to make the connections that are the first steps to a process of helping people change and improve their own environment in South Central Los Angeles.

Organizer, Kenneth Jones, takes a moment to smile for the camera with a young volunteer.
