A group of donors teamed up to bring a new basketball court and skateboard park to the West Athens area of Los Angeles. The Win Forever facility at the Lennox Youth Center on Vermont Avenue was made possible by gifts from Nike, LA 84 Foundation and Win Forever.
Win Forever is a partner entity to A Better LA, and both were started by Pete Carroll to inspire winning, competitive approaches to life and support of helping positive changes to communities from within.
Pete Carroll attended the event and spoke to the crowd, as did Sheriff Lee Baca, pro skateboarder Theotis Beasley and Mr. Cartoon, a graphic designer and creator of the special Win Forever logo at the park. Yogi Roth of Win Forever was the master of ceremonies for the afternoon that was focused on kids playing basketball, skateboarding and having fun.
This was a great event for a couple of reasons. First, it commemorated the opening of a safe place for kids to come play in West Athens, an area of focus for A Better LA, and also demonstrated the respect and importance towards that community as evidenced by the high profile line-up of participants. Second, it provided a wonderful interaction between Pete Carroll and the kids. There was a short stint in the skateboard area (which wisely included very little skating by Pete), later followed by lots of one on one basketball with the kids – featuring ferocious defense by the coach, just as you might expect.
Check out the pictures and come visit the facility if you are in the area. It’s about a half mile north of Helen Keller Park, site of the annual Christmas Party and other A Better LA hosted community events.
