On May 2nd, 2010, Los Angeles came together for one purpose: to give back. Big Sunday is a non-profit organization that mobilizes 50,000 Angelenos on this one weekend to support their community and volunteer. Various initiatives around town included beautifaction, beach clean up, feeding the homeless, school classroom set up, and refurbising community centers. A Better LA was fortunate enough to involved in Big Sunday in partnership with Ernst & Young volunteers and the People for Community Improvement community center. Volunteers spent the day hauling trash, covering graffiti, painting classrooms and decorating wall murals. The energy and enthusiasm was the highlight of the day because volunteers worked alongside community members in a joint effort to get the center ready for the kids. The PCI youth center will have probation classes, game and movie nights, a dance studio, football programs and a computer lab. Kenneth Jones, founder and president of PCI, was like a kid at Christmas when he saw what his center had been transformed into. He also has dreams of setting up a boxing ring and training area. Thank you to everyone who participated in Big Sunday and we look forward to next year!
