On August 29th, A Better LA co-hosted a peaceful community event at Algin Sutton Park at 8800 Hoover Blvd in Los Angeles just south of USC.
Along with local intervention group Advocates of Peace and Urban Unity (APUU) and ABLA partner A Foundation for Kids (AFFK) volunteers had games for kids, inflatable bounce houses, a pool party, a free BBQ for all attendees and numerous raffle prizes and giveaways. There were many highlights of the day but some of the most rewarding for our volunteers were the free handouts of backpacks, lunch pails, baby clothes, Converse shoes and family food baskets.
We also recieved a surprise visit from Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and his new Deputy of Chief Jeff Carr. The Mayor spoke to the crowd and encouraged them to stay involved and to work together to keep our parks safe. He also got into the fun and read off the grand prizes for the raffle including a Playstation and XBOX360. After the Mayor left, the crowd continued the party with a “jerking” contest, a dance battle between different age groups. As the event was winding down the park had another special guest – USC head coach and founder of A Better LA Pete Carroll who found time to stop by after this scrimmage at the Coliseum. He spoke to the crowd and congratulated APUU on a successful event at Algin Sutton and commended their work in that neighborhood.
We are looking forward to more successful events with our partner agencies this fall including a fundraiser on Halloween at Helen Keller and the toy drive this December. To get involved or for more information contact Patrick at volunteer@abetterla.org.
